Air New Zealand Invites Voluntary Passenger Weigh-In to Enhance Flight Efficiency
Air New Zealand has introduced a voluntary passenger weigh-in initiative to gain a better understanding of the load carried by their planes. The airline aims to collect data that will enable them to plan fuel loads and optimize routing for enhanced operational efficiency. Emphasizing privacy, Air New Zealand assures passengers that there will be no public display of the weight information.
Recognizing that stepping on the scales can be intimidating, airline spokesperson Alastair James reassures customers that the process will be discreet. He stated, "We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere. By weighing in, you'll be helping us fly safely and efficiently every time."
Currently, airlines utilize standard weights for passengers in load calculations, adjusting them slightly for seasonal variations. However, these estimates are widely considered to be unrealistically low. With the increase in passenger weight and the additional baggage carried due to rising baggage fees, Air New Zealand seeks more accurate data. The airline aims to weigh 10,000 passengers voluntarily between May 2 and July 2, 2023. A similar survey was conducted with domestic passengers in 2021.
By obtaining reliable weight information through this initiative, Air New Zealand aims to enhance safety and operational efficiency, ensuring a seamless travel experience for all passengers.
