Catalina Aircraft, a Florida-based company, has unveiled its ambitious plan to build a modernized version of the historic Consolidated PBY Catalina flying boat. This legendary aircraft, known for its vital role in hunting Nazi U-boats during World War II, will be reimagined as a turboprop amphibious flying boat while retaining the original design principles that made it iconic.
Despite being developed nearly 90 years ago, the Catalina PBY continues to have a presence in commercial service as water bombers and cargo planes, while flying versions are preserved in various museums. Capitalizing on this storied legacy, Catalina Aircraft believes that there is still a significant niche to be filled in both civilian and military applications.
The company has outlined its ambitious vision, intending to manufacture two models. The first model is envisioned as a civilian aircraft with an all-up weight of 30,000 pounds, offering accommodation for 34 passengers and a cargo capacity of 12,000 pounds. For military purposes, a more powerful version weighing 40,000 pounds is planned.
Lawrence Reece, President of Catalina Aircraft, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, stating, "Interest in the rebirth of this legendary amphibian has been extraordinary. We are looking forward to moving this program forward rapidly." The company aims to achieve its first flight milestone in 2029, ushering in a new era for the iconic PBY Catalina flying boat.
