Diamond Aircraft has achieved a major milestone with the successful first flight of its all-electric eDA40 single aircraft. The momentous event took place at Diamond's headquarters in Wiener Neustadt, Austria, on July 20. The aircraft is powered by the innovative ENGINeUS™ electric smart motor, supplied by Safran Electrical & Power, and equipped with a cutting-edge battery module from Electric Power Systems (EPS) featuring a direct current (DC) fast charging system. Diamond anticipates that the eDA40 will become the first electric aircraft to receive EASA/FAA Part 23 certification.
Sören Pedersen, Head of Flight Test at Diamond, skillfully piloted the aircraft during its maiden flight. The comprehensive tests included system checks, basic maneuvers, and a preliminary performance evaluation, all of which were successfully completed as planned.
Liqun (Frank) Zhang, CEO of Diamond Aircraft Austria, expressed his delight with the aircraft's performance during the flight, stating, "The aircraft performed outstandingly well during its maiden flight and not only met but exceeded all our expectations. We are very much looking forward to offering an exceptional sustainable aircraft for the flight training market of tomorrow." Zhang also proudly announced this significant milestone as Diamond Aircraft continues to advance in the development of their all-electric eDA40 aircraft.
