FAA Extends Deadline for Drone Operators to Implement Mandatory Electronic Identification Gear
In response to supply chain challenges, the FAA has granted drone operators an additional six months to install essential electronic identification equipment on their aircraft. The deadline for compliance has now been extended to March 16, 2024, allowing operators more time to integrate the required miniature modules or acquire factory-equipped drones capable of broadcasting mandated identification and location data. Acknowledging the unforeseen difficulties faced by some operators in sourcing remote identification broadcast modules, the FAA emphasized the importance of meeting this requirement. Drone pilots can ensure compliance by either purchasing a standard Remote ID-equipped drone directly from a manufacturer or acquiring a Remote ID broadcast module for attachment to existing drones lacking this equipment. Operators failing to equip their drones with the "digital license plate" by the extended deadline risk incurring fines and potential loss of their pilot certificates.
