The ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers at the New York TRACON has led the FAA to extend the relaxation of slot use requirements at the major New York airports until October 28, 2023. The FAA's decision, announced through a news release on Wednesday, offers airlines the flexibility to adjust flight frequency without the risk of losing valuable slots at La Guardia, Kennedy, and Newark Airports. The news release emphasized the expectation for airlines to prioritize larger aircraft for increased passenger capacity and to ensure travelers are well-informed about potential disruptions.
Originally introduced in May, the slot waiver initiative was aimed at assisting the FAA, which was grappling with staffing shortages, in managing the seasonal surge in air travel. Although the waivers were initially set to conclude on September 15, the extension acknowledges the anticipation of sustained high demand through the early autumn, aligning with the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) definition of the end of the summer travel period.
This program has demonstrated its efficacy. By employing larger aircraft on fewer flights, air traffic has decreased by 6 percent while the number of passengers transported has risen by 2 percent. Concurrently, the FAA is actively addressing the personnel deficit. The agency is collaborating closely with the National Air Traffic Controllers Association to implement a lasting solution to address the ongoing low staffing levels at the New York TRACON.
