Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) Opens Reservations for First Electric Flights
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced that it will commence seat reservations on June 2, 2023, for its inaugural commercial electric flights. These flights are anticipated to take place in 2028, featuring one domestic route each in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Priced at SEK 1,946 ($180), the ticket cost pays tribute to the year SAS commenced its aviation operations. SAS disclosed that there will be 30 available seats on each flight, and ticket fees will be collected 30 days prior to departure.
SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff expressed, "Since its establishment in 1946, SAS has been a pioneering force in the airline industry, including being the first commercial airline to fly over the North Pole, significantly reducing flight time between continents." van der Werff continued, "Inviting our passengers to participate in the next significant milestone of aviation aligns with our pioneering spirit and represents a significant step toward a more sustainable aviation future."
The airline has yet to finalize its decision on the specific aircraft to be utilized for these planned flights. Since 2019, SAS has collaborated with Airbus and Sweden-based Heart Aerospace, focusing on the development of low- and zero-emission electric- and hydrogen-powered commercial aircraft. In September 2022, SAS showed its support by signing a letter of intent to potentially incorporate Heart's electric ES-30 aircraft, designed to accommodate 30 passengers, into its regional fleet. The ES-30 is currently under development, with certification for commercial flights targeted for 2028.
