TSA Records Highest-Ever Sunday Air Travel in the U.S. Surpassing Previous Peaks

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) reports that this Sunday marked the busiest day ever recorded for air travel in the United States. TSA head David Pekoske revealed that security screeners efficiently processed over 2.9 million passengers through checkpoints at the nation's airports, facilitating travel for more than 50,000 flights. This Sunday's total surpassed the previous record of 2.8 million passengers on June 30, with the busiest day before that being on December 1, 2019.

The surge in air travel continues, with substantial numbers of travelers converging at airports. Tuesday was anticipated to see around 2.6 million passengers, and Wednesday is expected to host 2.7 million travelers.

While some weather-related delays occurred due to systems passing through the Midwest and Southeast on Sunday, they were not comparable to the extensive weather-related disruptions experienced last winter. O'Hare International Airport likely experienced the most delays, with Atlanta and New York also facing weather-related challenges. Additionally, fog in Seattle contributed to regional issues. Since Sunday, delays have averaged about 20,000 per day, with approximately 500 cancellations.
