United Airlines has made a significant aircraft order announcement, marking its second major order for new-generation planes. This move is part of the airline's ongoing effort to modernize its fleet, particularly for international routes.
The new order includes 50 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2031, along with 60 Airbus A321neo ("new engine option") single-aisle aircraft set for delivery between 2028 and 2030. Additionally, the order includes options for an additional 50 Dreamliners and 40 Airbus A321neos.
United's CEO, Scott Kirby, expressed confidence in the airline's strategy, emphasizing their commitment to adding larger and more advanced aircraft to better serve their growing flight operations, both domestically and internationally.
While the published price for a 787-9 is $292.5 million and $129.5 million for the Airbus A321neo, it's important to note that airlines often negotiate discounts, especially for substantial orders. These larger-capacity jets will play a crucial role in accommodating United's anticipated increase in occupied seats per flight, which is expected to rise by 40 percent by 2027, from 104 to 145 seats per North American departure in 2019.
