Viking Air Twin Otter Crashes off California Coast during Possible Ferry Flight to Hawaii


The FAA has confirmed the crash of a Viking Air 400 Series Twin Otter approximately 35 miles off the coast of California, suspected to have occurred during a potential ferry flight to Hawaii. The aircraft departed Santa Rosa, California, at around 3:21 p.m. en route to Honolulu. Tragically, the crash took place at approximately 4:15 p.m., with two individuals on board. According to the Aviation Safety Network, the aircraft had initiated a turn back toward Half Moon Bay Airport.

Available online photographs depict the aircraft, registered under Seafly LLC of Palo Alto, California, equipped with amphibious floats. While the Series 400 Twin Otter, a modern iteration of the aircraft manufactured by De Havilland Canada, typically boasts a range of around 950 miles, the distance between California and Honolulu exceeds 2,350 miles.
